Autumn smiled lightly at him and shook her head at his offer. “No, but thanks for the offer. I quite like it here. Reminds me of myself, actually.” That was only partly true. She really wanted to hear the music again, but she wouldn’t voice that part of her wants. “Besides,” she added, “I’ve got nowhere to go. I’m not around here.”

Ian nodded as he listened to Autumn. “Oh, well, I’ve got a spare room back at my place. I know that must sound so weird, but I’d totally prefer you somewhere safe and under a roof than just walking around here in the dark alone, you know what I mean?” he said. He could feel Adam’s glare hitting him from the back of his neck and he tried his everything to keep from looking back up at the window. “You should really, really leave this area, I think it’s the only smart idea.” he said to her as he nervously held onto his car keys in his jacket pocket. If she doesn’t come with me, I have no idea what the fuck I can do to get her to leave… then Adam will be really pissed… he said to himself.

Autumn thought for a moment, plucking the string of her guitar as she thought. On one side, she wanted to go with him, because he was offering something she needed. But on the other side, she wanted to stay. She wasn’t sure who he was, only that he had a niche for instruments, and she didn’t quite trust him. He also seemed to be on edge about something, and that made her nervous. “I… I don’t know… I mean, I barely know you.” she knew her decision would be stupid either way, but she had to make it. “How can I know that you’re not going to, I don’t know, kill me and throw me in a ditch?”

Autumn looked up once to see the man entering the house with a black guitar case. Smiling lightly, she turned back to her own case, which was cluttered with sheets of music, both printed off and handwritten, and took out a blank page and a pen, writing down the chords and the time signature she’d come up with on her own. Once she finished writing, she went back to playing, just to make sure it sounded good.

Looking up at the front door of the house the man entered, she couldn’t help but wander why someone would choose to live in such a place. Not that it was bad by any of her standards, but she figured a musician would want to live in a better place than that sort of house. Shrugging it off, she resumed playing.

Adam welcomed Ian inside with leading him up the rickety old stairs that looked too old to still be in use, a faded old long red carpet over the steps. Adam spoke first, “Is she one of your rock-n-roll friends?” he asked sternly. “Nah, she’s not. But I think she caught a little of your tune Adam. I heard her playing some of your notes when I was out there.” he said. “Fuck.” Adam said with frustration as they made it upstairs into the music room. Ian licked his lips, “I’ll tell her to go away when I leave.” Adam sighed and walked into the room, standing in the center of it as he watched Ian pull out a new guitar for him.

After about 20 minutes of examining the guitar, playing it a bit, and then talking to Ian briefly about some things, Ian made his way back down the steps of the stairs. His pocket was heavy with a new wad of thick bills from Adam. He almost always overpaid him for doing something for him. Adam wasn’t poor, not as much as the home he lived in showed. But Ian didn’t say anything, nor did he speak of it to anyone. He took a confidentiality agreement with Adam, his boss, about not talking to anyone about knowing him. He kept his lips shut, and Adam let him keep his life.

Once outside, Ian noticed the girl on the sidewalk still strumming away at her guitar. Ian hesitantly licked his lips and then walked over to her. “Sweet guitar.” he said. “What is it?”

Autumn was pretty much as lost in her music as she could get on the side of the street. She looked up at the man as he approached her, drawing her tune to a close. She gave him a small smile. “A Gibson Les Paul.” she said softly, a hand gently caressing her most cherished possession. It was a parting gift from her parents when she turned 18 - though she saw it more as ‘you have a way of making money now, so out you go’. “I take it you have a liking for instruments? Considering the case you were carrying, I’d say that guitar was brand new.”

Autumn felt the absence of the music she was following, but she had gotten the hang of the rhythm of the tune to keep it going. After a minute or so, she decided to stop playing that particular piece, despite her liking for it. and went to one of her original songs. She noticed the BMW pull up, but she didn’t really acknowledge it or it’s driver’s presence, already lost in her own music.

Autumn moved slowly to the edge of the walk and sat down on the curb. She listened to the volume increase slightly, but enough for her to hear a rhythm she could follow. Pulling her guitar from its case, she gently picked the strings to tune it, though she didn’t have her amp with her so it didn’t truly matter. She began to strum along to the rhythm of the music, closing her eyes as she tried to let her fingers follow the melody that she was hearing.

Turning the corner, Autumn wandered down another street that was less crowded -thank god- than the previous one. She wasn’t truly paying attention until she heard the faint sound of music humming through the air. It sounded like it was passing through walls, which she suspected had to be the only explanation for the sound. Gently tugging her headphone out of her ear, she stopped for a moment, just to listen to the beautiful, yet somewhat somber, music.

Detroit, Michigan. Autumn thought to herself as she walked through the streets, shifting her guitar case from one hand to the other, as the night began to fall. My, it has been too long since I came here last. She had been just a young girl of six when she stepped foot in the city the first time. She shrugged her jacket back in place as she pulled out her headphones, putting only the left one in her ear, and turned on her music. She breathed out a small sigh of relief at the sound of the music filling her ear, dulling the sound of the city around her.
